After six long years, Wanda Ileen Barzee, captor’s wife of Elizabeth Smart, plead guilty and was finally sentenced to 15 years after being involved in the kidnapping. Wanda Barzee together with her husband Brian David Mitchell were declared mentally incompetent to stand trial on 2005. The trial has been postponed indefinitely because of their condition.
Barzee appeared healthy today after she underwent anti-psychotic medication to restore her mental competence. She admitted that she helped helped kidnap and enslave Elizabeth Smart. She agreed to testify against her husband Brian David Mitchell in exchange for a reduced, 15-year sentence. And this is what she said:
“I’m so sorry, Elizabeth for all the pain and suffering I caused you and your family.”
Mitchell’s lawyer, Robert Steele, said that his client suffers from delusion. As of now, Mitchell is still excluded from criminal prosecution. Elizabeth doesn’t want both Mitchell and Barzee to be released because she knows that they will haunt her again.
Elizabeth haven’t told in her interview nor with her parents what happened to her during the nine month captivity. Her father, Ed Smart, said in an interview that they don’t need to know what happened because what matters most is that Elizabeth is back and alive. But she narrated the whole story when she testified against Brian David Mitchell. It was a horrible story that you could ever imagined. Even her father was shocked to her story. This is how she describe Mitchell:
“Evil, wicked, manipulative, sneaky, slimy, selfish, greedy, not spiritual, not religious, not close to God.”
Brian David Mitchell is a homeless self proclaimed prophet who refused to submit to psychiatric test. Before Elizabeth could enter the room, the judge ordered Mitchell out because he doesn’t stop on singing church hymns.
According to Elizabeth, on June 5, 2002, she was abducted from her Salt Lake City, Utah, bedroom when she was fourteen years old. Around two in the morning when Mitchell broke in. Elizabeth said that Mitchell placed his hand on her chest and put the knife up to her neck. She said that Mitchell threatened to kill her family if she will scream. Her nine-year old sister Mary Katherine was just beside her and witnessed the abduction. She pretended sleeping while Mitchell is walking away with her sister. She didn’t know what to do and because she feared that Mitchell will noticed her, she waited for about several minutes before she told her parents. Her parents didn’t believe this at first but when they fpund put that their daughter was gone, they reported it immediately to the police the next day.
Elizabeth said that she was marched three miles to a canyon. She met Wanda Barzee who told her to wash her feet and put a robe on. She said that Mitchell performed a wedding ceremony then after that he raped her. She said that he had a big cable bolted on her leg which was strung between two trees with a lock andd the key was around his neck. And from that moment, she said that there wasn’t an actual 24 hour period that he wasn’t able to rape her. Not only that, Mitchell gave her alcohol and drugs. She was shrouded by her religious bail from head to toe to conceal her identity for about nine months but someone recognized her and called police. On March 12, 2003, she was found with Mitchell and Barzee in Sandy Utah.
